Plenty Volunteer Opportunities 2011


Belize: Volunteers are needed with organic gardening/sustainable agriculture skills to work on the GATE gardens project at rural primary schools. The ability to work cooperatively and communicate basic gardening and environmental concepts to students is key. This is a three month minimum position, with a spring or fall 2011 start date.

Kids To The Country: Energetic volunteers are sought to work as counselors with a nature-based summer program for at-risk kids aged 6-12 on the Farm community in middle Tennessee. Five 4-day program sessions are held in July and August. Volunteers spend a minimum of two weeks, which includes a week for orientation prior to a program session. Must love kids and work well with them. Arts, crafts, music and horse care/riding experience is a plus. Email for 2011 orientation and program dates.

Gulf Coast recovery: Volunteers with building experience are needed to assist Plenty volunteers with home repair in and around New Orleans. Volunteers are also needed to help collect, catalog and distribute educational children’s books to schools and community centers on the gulf coast and in Nashville, TN. Email for more information. U.S. based volunteers/interns are needed to work with Plenty International staff to develop Plenty’s fundraising, outreach and networking efforts. Work in your local area! Time commitment is open-ended.

Volunteer Opportunities with Plenty Partners

Guatemala: UPAVIM - Unidas Para Vivir Mejor (United to Live Better) is a large multi-faceted women's cooperative located in Barrio La Esperanza in Guatemala City. Especially needed are tutors for school children, English teachers, and medical personnel. An intermediate level of Spanish is required. Volunteers must provide their own travel expenses. Liberia, Africa: Imani House International - (IHI), is looking for a highly motivated volunteer to work with our staff and members on the ground.  IHI Liberia runs a community clinic, adult literacy classes for market women and demonstration agricultural programs.  Our clinic offers maternal and child health care, immunization, pre-natal and emergency deliveries, dental care, laboratory testing, and health education.

We are looking for a volunteer who has lived/gone to school or worked in a developing country, is friendly, capable, patient and a good communicator, is hard working, with good organizational and management skills and a willingness to work closely with Liberians and the IHI head office in New York.

Volunteers must have an understanding of social justice issues and the root causes of poverty. The volunteer must be able to pay their travel expenses. A monthly stipend of $350 is provided. Must be able to commit to at least six consecutive months on the ground in Liberia. The position is available effective August, 2012.
