Belize: Toledo District School Lunch Program

The Toledo District School Feeding Program (SFP) is part of a national effort in Belize to help undernourished primary school children do better in school by providing them with a hot lunch.

Because children in the Toledo District have the highest incidence of malnutrition in Belize, the SFP is especially critical here.

The SFP Committee, made up of representatives of all the schools, actively assists Plenty Belize in the planning, monitoring, and implementation of the GATE (Garden-based Agriculture for Toledo's Environment) Program.

Adding Soy Protein

Plenty has provided soybeans to the schools for their lunch programs along with support for the cooks to learn how to make and incorporate these high protein foods with traditional meals.

Plenty’s local Nutrition promoter, Barbara Nightingale, was asked to provide instruction on making soymilk and okara.

She has also helped the cooks at participating schools learn ways of incorporating the school garden vegetables into the children’s meals.
