"I found the two days I spent in a Maya village the most memorable I've had in my seven years of travel in Central America. The experience is one that I will hold significant for the rest of my life." - T.E.A. Program participant.

"To visit Belize, one must visit the people. Only in their eyes and hearts can one discover Belize, and I know of no better way than the T.E.A. Village Guesthouse and Ecotrail program to gaze into their eyes and heart." - T.E.A. Program participant.

The T.E.A. is comprised of Mopan, Kekchi, and Garifuna (Carib/African) villages in the forgotten southern district of Toledo in Belize.

This program was formed to enable the local peoples to directly plan, control and profit from ecotourism. Profits from the T.E.A. program go to a general fund which contributes to village health and education, rainforest conservation and central office operation. More than 80% of all funds stay in the individual village that is visited.

The picturesque Maya villages of southern Belize present a window into the traditional way of life of the great Mayan civilization of thousands of years ago and as it lives today. You will enjoy the hospitality of the friendly English-speaking people in the villages. Different families will host you for breakfast, lunch and supper. Vegetarian or special meals can be arranged. The peaceful villages offer a colorful and breathtaking natural environment, exposure to ancient philosophies, rituals and medicines, as well as a profound understanding of the balance of nature.

The Wonder of the Rainforest

Enjoy guided canoe trips down jungle rivers.

Lush rainforest covers the surrounding hills of the villages. Ecotrail systems allow you to step into virgin jungle rich with wildlife, hidden streams and mysterious caves. Climbing the hills provides a spectacular view of the rainforest below and the magnificent Maya Mountains in the distance. Some trails lead to beautiful waterfalls that empty into cool streams. The jungle is home to 500 species of tropical birds, 200 types of wild orchids and the elusive jaguar.

A Charming Garifuna Fishing Village

The beautiful fishing village of Barranco is the best representation of traditional Garifuna culture. In striking contrast to the Maya villages, Barranco offers a coastal setting and a rich culture derived from the Amerindian/African heritage of the region. Your days can be spent fishing in dugout canoes, or visiting the Temash River Forest Reserve. Nights come alive with Garifuna drumming and dancing.
