Pine Ridge
In June five Plenty volunteers from the Farm Community in Summertown, Tennessee went to Pine Ridge reservation and completed the volunteer camp kitchen and dining area in the Slim Buttes Community on the Reservation. They doubled the size of the facility, and added screens and screen doors. The project was funded in part by generous donations from Mose Oppenheimer of the P.E.A.C.E. Awareness Foundation and the Community Center at the Farm.
In August, Plentys Executive Director paid a visit to Tom and Loretta Cook who have supervised Plenty projects at Pine Ridge since 1986 when Plenty helped the Slim Buttes Community start the home and community gardens project which, by 2002, had expanded to 330 gardens producing fresh vegetables for a population suffering from one of the highest rates of diabetes and heart disease in America. Plentys Executive Director was accompanied by Plenty donor Robert Reifel. During their visit, Mr. Reifel made a $2,000 donation for the completion of the hemp house being constructed at Slim Buttes and Plenty made an additional $1,000 donation. The Slim Buttes Community Agriculture Project is pioneering the use of industrial hemp for building materials in the United States. The elected Oglala Sioux Tribal Council has authorized the growing and use of industrial hemp on the Reservation.
Another $7,267 in grants were donated to Pine Ridge projects through Plenty by Onaway Trust.
