Toledo District

Travel to Punta Gorda: By Plane / By Bus / By Boat /
Village Map / Punta Gorda

The Toledo district lies at the southern tip of Belize, and the sea coast town of Punta Gorda, the gateway to the Mayan homelands. At the center is San Antonio, the largest of the region's Mayan villages, with an approximate population of 2500 people. In the surrounding area over a dozen smaller villages serve as the home for the Kek' chi and Mopan people.

Arrival by Plane
From the international airport in Belize City, many of our visitors choose to travel by small plane to Punta Gorda, a total travel time of about one hour. Flights cost approximately $75 US each way.

Arrival by Boat
Many people enter Belize from the south traveling by boat from Guatemala. The journey by sea takes about one hour, following the coast up from Puerto Barrios and Livingston, Guatemala.

Arrival by Bus
From the north the least expensive way to travel is by bus. The overland route from Belize City takes approximately 8-10 hours, about half over unpaved road. However the government hopes to have the Southern Highway completely paved within the next few years, with road crews working very hard to fulfill that goal.

Villages located along or near the southern highway have bus service everyday. Buses to and from all other Villages travel Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Buses leave for the villages from PG from 11 to 12. The time of departure from the villages to PG varies but is usually very, very early in the morning. Transportation by car or van can be arranged by special request.
