KIDS TO THE COUNTRY 2000
Every year Kids To The Country says it's had its best year yet, and it keeps being true because something is always new, bigger or better! We served more children in 1999 (almost 200) in all our activities. We received more grants - Milagro Foundation, Hohenberg Foundation (to start a Memphis component), Josephine Bay Paul & C. Michael Paul Foundation, Frist Foundation, TN Managed Care Network, Warner Brothers, Saturn Corporation and many more generous corporations and individuals. The program is becoming more seasoned and respected.
We want to thank the generous people who faithfully send their sponsor dollars to make sure that these children get the chance to experience the KTC program and learn about their relationship with their environment. In KTC they are encouraged to consider themselves a resource with answers to our global concerns. They learn skills that build self-reliance and self-esteem. Perhaps most importantly, they are listened to and encouraged for the positive contributions that they make.
As a KTC counselor wrote: "We are planting seeds. Seeds so they will have memories of what walking through the cool forest and swimming in a natural pond feels like. Perhaps when they grow up and become decision-makers, they will remember to plant trees and gardens and leave some wild places on the earth and in their hearts."

FALL VISIT TO PINE RIDGE
by Kathryn Hutchens, Plenty Board Member
At Thanksgiving last year, my husband Jerry, our 12 year old daughter, Faith, and I made a trip from the Farm here in Tennessee to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota to visit Tom and Loretta Cook, the hemp brick manufacturing operation and the Hemp House project sponsored by Plenty. As a new Plenty board member, I was glad to be able to see the project first hand and to recon- nect with Tom and Loretta.

Silm Butte Agricultural Director Tom Cook with a fuel efficient wood stove designed by Frank Michael and donated by Planty - a design suited for Pine Ridge winters are harsh and firewood is scarce. |
Thanks to a grant from Onaway Trust last fall, Plenty had acquired a 12 passenger van to haul volunteers and supplies to projects in the US and abroad. We loaded the van with a "smokeless" fuel-efficient wood burning stove, built by Frank Michael for the Hemp House, and much warm clothing donated by Farm community 'dents. Friends at Pine Ridge were happy to receive both resi and gave us a tour of the hemp brick operation, the extensive garden site and the inspiring Hemp House.
While at Tom and Loretta's, I was able to purchase a few of the Lakota crafts which Loretta helps sell, for festivals on the Farm. She recently received an award for her work as a Native American entrepreneur. Our family is looking forward to visiting them again in June to see the progress on the various projects, including the home gardens program, which should be in full swing.
