Belize Notes
by Peter Schweitzer

I spent the first two weeks of June in Toledo working with Melanie and Greg, hiking around the rainforest with Lee Jones and the birding trainees, visiting our project partners, attending meetings, trouble shooting computers and taking pictures. The level of activity related to Plenty Belize was something to behold. My first day there the Plenty Office was filled with TBAs (Traditional Birth Attendants) who had been trained last year by Deborah Flowers and were continuing their education under the guidance of Concha Velasquez.

Glenn Brown whisked me off to San Antonio where we spent most of the day in the rainforest.

Jaun Sho and Isidro Choc are the birding monitors being trained for San Antonio. Plotting location with Global positioning System (GPS).

The next week there was a huge science fair in Punta Gorda involving all the schools from all the villages of the Toledo District. The theme of the fair was protecting the environment and the kids had made elaborate displays about such topics as the causes of erosion and pollution and how to prevent them.

The Plenty booth featured a solar panel running a fan set up by Chris Nesbitt and a solar box cooker. Both attracted much attention.

I also visited our old friend Pablo Cal, now Chairman of the Toledo Cacao Growers Association, and got a first hand look at his solar water pumping setup which he said has changed his life. His wife and children are especially grateful not to have to haul water up a steep hill from their spring 4 and 5 times a day.
