Central American Food Security Initiative (CAFSI)

Plenty is spearheading a new initiative aimed at helping four nonprofit organizations in Guatemala, Nicaragua and Mexico to provide high nutrient, low cost foods within their communities. The four groups – SoyNica (Nicaragua), UPAVIM and ADIBE (Guatemala) and the Huichol Center (Mexico) are long time project partners with Plenty, who offer critical social service programs in health, jobs, and education to their local community members. High-protein food production facilities provide both low cost foods to the community and a way to produce income. Two of the groups (SoyNica and ADIBE) already manage facilities, which are in need of upgrade and expansion. UPAVIM and the Huichol Center are in the beginning stages of establishing such facilities. Funding for CAFSI would make it possible for Plenty to offer material support and coordinate an educational and technical exchange among the four groups.

The cost of the two-year CAFSI program is projected at $250,000. We are looking for donors interested in supporting this effort as well as ideas for new funding partners. Please contact Plenty for more information.
